In this video, I’m building a simple USB load tester using only old, wasted components from my electronics junk box.

A USB load is super useful when you need to:

  • test USB chargers πŸ”‹
  • check powerbanks ⚑
  • diagnose bad or unstable USB cables πŸ”Œ

Unfortunately, my old USB load tester died while testing a damaged charger… so instead of waiting two weeks for a replacement from AliExpress, I decided to build one myself using what I already had.

🧰 What’s inside this DIY USB load:

  • Old cut-off Xiaomi 1S charger cable
  • Two resistors (5Ξ©, 5W each)
  • Simple ON/OFF switch

βš™οΈ How it works:

  • 1Γ— 5Ξ© resistor β†’ ~1A load at 5V
  • Two 5Ξ© resistors in series β†’ 10Ξ© β†’ ~0.5A load

With a single switch, I can test devices in two load modes:

  • 1 amp πŸ”₯
  • 0.5 amp πŸ”Ή

No microcontrollers, no displays, no fans β€”
just pure old-school resistor load.

πŸ˜… Typical DIY problems included:

  • Wrong resistor value (1kΞ© surprise!)
  • Burned LED due to wiring mistake
  • Resoldering everything from scratch

Sometimes it really is easier to buy a ready-made tester β€” but that’s not the point.
This project is about reuse, improvisation, and DIY spirit.

⚠️ Important note:
This is a basic and unprotected load.
If you need accuracy or safety β€” buy a proper USB load tester.
